SILVER CITY, Idaho (CBS 2) — The Bureau of Land Management is conducting a prescribed burn of about 21 square miles of rangeland in southwest Idaho.
BLM said the Trout Springs prescribed burn may be seen from far away and smoke could settle into surrounding canyons and valleys.
"This prescribed fire aims to remove encroaching stands of Western juniper to improve conditions on rangeland that provides habitat for wildlife and forage for livestock grazing," reads a press release from BLM. "In recent decades, juniper has begun to spread and compete with sage-steppe vegetation for water, nutrients, space, and sunlight, while also altering the natural wildfire cycle."
Luckily Idaho has the resources to prescribe burns because the 2019 fire season hasn't been as severe as previous years.
The fire will be started by hand crews and helicopters.
It will be about 37 miles south of Silver City. BLM encourages people the area until the prescribed burns are done.
It could last until Sept. 30.
