India’s richest female fashion designer took her business to a Rs 1000 crore valuation, and has owns many popular brands and fashion labels in the country.
While India is the home to some of the best fashion designers across the globe such as Manish Malhotra, Ritu Kumar and Sabyasachi, the country’s richest and fastest-growing fashion designer is considered to be Anita Dongre.
Anita Dongre is one of the top fashion designers in India and built a business worth hundreds of crores with over 270 stores across the country. However, her journey to the top was not easy, and her multi-crore business started with just two sewing machines.
Anita Dongre’s mother Pushpa used to stitch clothes for her children, which is what inspired her daughter to grow up to become a fashion designer. Growing up, Anita Dongre realized that there is no Indian retail brand that manufactures affordable clothing for working women.
Soon, Anita decided to start her own business with just two sewing machines and a small loan from her father. In 1995, Anita and her sister started sewing western outfits from a small apartment. All the malls and big brands rejected her clothes but this didn’t hurt her confidence.
After being rejected by multiple malls and brands, Anita Dongre decided to launch her own brand, a name which is now a popular brand in India – AND. After launching AND Designs in 2015, she converted her company name to House of Anita Dongre.
Rising through the ranks to become one of the most prestigious clothing brands in India, Anita Dongre now has multiple ventures under her belt - AND, Global Desi, Anita Dongre Bridal Couture, Anita Dongre Grassroot, and Anita Dongre Pink City.
In an interview, Dongre revealed that her retail turnover, after launching over 270 stores in India, was nearly Rs 800 crore in FY 2019-20. In 2023, her revenue is expected to have crossed Rs 1000 crore, with Forbes stating her richest female fashion designer in India.
Anita Dongre is estimated to have a net worth of USD 10 million, which comes out to over Rs 83.21 crore.
