Kevin James is an American actor/comedian, film producer, and screenwriter. He starred as “Doug Heffernan” on the CBS series The King of Queens (1998-2007), and as “Kevin Gable” on Kevin Can Wait (2016-18). His film credits include Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009), Zookeeper (2011), Here Comes the Boom (2012), and Pixels (2015). James was born Kevin George Knipfing on April 26, 1965, in Mineola, New York. His parents are Janet and Joe Knipfing. He has a brother, Gary Valentine, and a sister, Leslie. James grew up in Long Island, New York, where he attended Ward Melville High School. He majored in sports management at Cortland State College but dropped out shy of a degree. James was a standout member of his high school wrestling team. He wrestled with future WWE star Mick Foley. In college, he played football halfback until an injury ended his career.
CAREER
James worked as a physical trainer prior to comedy. His first notable stand-up gig was at Long Island’s East Side Comedy Club in 1989. During his tenure, he met and became good friends with Richie Minervini and Ray Romano. James would eventually appear on popular talk shows like Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. He also earned a spot on Comedy Central’s list of greatest stand-up comedians. James has performed at the annual ‘Just for Laughs’ comedy festival in Montreal, Quebec. His stand-up specials include Kevin James: Sweat the Small Stuff (2001) and Kevin James: Never Don’t Give Up (2018).
In 1996, James made his television debut on the CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. The show was created by Philip Rosenthal and starred his friend Ray Romano. James co-wrote, produced, and starred in Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009), Zookeeper (2011), and Here Comes the Boom (2012).
